shortformen is a video engineering lab obsessed with the science of short-form video. Helping 50,000+ creators build videos that keep people watching.
Most creators rely on gut feel when producing short-form content. They post, hope for views, and repeat — never understanding why some videos explode while others disappear. We set out to change that.
shortformen was built on a single principle: video performance is not random. Every second of a video sends a signal to the algorithm and to the human brain. The hook, the scene pacing, the CTA position — these are all engineered decisions that can be studied, optimized, and systematized.
"Data-driven video creation isn't just for big brands. Every solo creator deserves the same tools."
We aggregate patterns from millions of high-performing videos, translate them into repeatable frameworks, and put those frameworks in the hands of creators at every level — from the first-time TikToker to the 7-figure agency.
From a Tokyo apartment to 50,000 creators worldwide — here's how shortformen was built.
Kai Tanaka and Mia Sato founded shortformen out of frustration with inconsistent short-form video results. Working from a shared apartment in Nakameguro, they began manually analyzing thousands of TikTok and Reels videos, cataloguing patterns that separated viral videos from the rest.
After analyzing over 200,000 short-form videos, we published "The Anatomy of a Viral Short-Form Video" — a data-backed research study that broke down exactly what makes viewers stay. The study reached 200,000 readers in its first week and put shortformen on the map as a research authority.
With the research validated and creator interest confirmed, we built and launched the shortformen platform beta. Within three months, 5,000 early access creators were using our Video Structure Analyzer, Scene Breakdown tool, and Hook Generator — posting measurably better results than ever before.
A milestone year. shortformen crossed 1 million individual video analyses on the platform. We also formalized partnerships with 12 content agencies across Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, embedding our frameworks into their production pipelines and training teams on our methodology.
shortformen now serves creators across six continents. Our platform is available in English and Japanese, with Korean and Spanish interfaces in development. The Tokyo team has grown to 14 full-time engineers, researchers, and strategists — all laser-focused on one goal: making every second of your videos count.
We're a small, focused team of engineers, researchers, and creators obsessed with the science of short-form video.
CEO & Head of Video Engineering
Former product lead at a major video platform. Kai has been studying algorithmic patterns in short-form video since 2019 and has personally analyzed over 50,000 individual videos. He oversees all engineering and product strategy at shortformen.
Head of Research & Data Science
PhD in Cognitive Psychology from Keio University. Mia brings behavioral science to video analysis — understanding not just what viewers do, but why. She leads all research publications and the data pipeline powering shortformen's AI tools.
Lead Content Strategist
7 years as a content director for Japan's top YouTube and TikTok creators. Ryo translates data findings into practical creator frameworks. He writes the shortformen blog and leads all agency partnership training programs.
Platform Engineer
Full-stack engineer with a specialty in real-time video analysis pipelines. Yuki built the core shortformen platform from the ground up, including the retention prediction engine and the scene-detection algorithm that powers our automated analysis tools.
Great software is never built on vibes. It's architected, tested, iterated, and measured. We believe the same standards should apply to video content — especially short-form, where every second is precious.
Every framework we publish is built from real performance data, not creative opinion.
We continuously update our models as platform algorithms and viewer behavior evolve.
TikTok, Reels, and Shorts each have distinct algorithm behaviors. We tailor guidance accordingly.
Every tool is designed to fit naturally into a creator's workflow — not add complexity to it.
Our values aren't a wall poster. They define how we build, what we ship, and who we serve.
We respect creative instinct, but we trust the numbers. Every recommendation we make is backed by measurable evidence from real video performance data.
The short-form world moves fast. We ship frameworks and tools quickly, then refine them based on feedback. Done and deployed beats perfect and delayed.
Every decision we make — product features, pricing, content — starts by asking: does this genuinely help creators succeed? If not, we don't build it.
Algorithms change. Viewer attention spans evolve. What worked six months ago may not work today. We remain perpetual students of the platform — so our creators stay ahead.
shortformen's product roadmap is written by our users. Every feature we ship, every framework we publish, and every tool we build starts with a creator telling us exactly what they need.
We run a continuous feedback loop across all 50,000 creators on the platform — weekly surveys, live office hours, and a dedicated feedback portal where any user can vote on upcoming features. The result is a product that solves real creator problems, not hypothetical ones.
